Home Away From Home

By Josh Vander Zwaag on October 19, 2017

Officially I have been here for half of a semester! Wow, time has gone so fast but the time was well spent! Over the last few weeks I have been a part of a host family and to simply say that I enjoyed my time would be a huge understatement. My host dad doesn’t speak any English but this has made the experience all the more interesting. Most of the time I have relied on Google translate to have a conversation with my host dad but this has made the experience all the more fun. As I look back on the last few weeks I think about how much I have grown and how my life has really changed. When I first arrived here I couldn’t speak any Romanian and I couldn’t understand anything anyone said to me. Now, I can speak a little Romanian and most of the time I can understand what someone says to me.

When I first came here I had no idea what life in Romania would be like; I worried about every little detail and I worried that I wasn’t getting the full Romanian experience. Now, I have become involved in the community and even though this is not my home I can truly say that I am comfortable enough to say this is a second home. Each day makes it easier to be a part of the everyday life of a Romanian and I give all the credit to my host family and of course God’s guidance. Each day typically I will eat breakfast with my host dad, go to class for a few hours, then when I get home my family takes me to do something. We will go on drives in the country side, take a walk, play ping-pong and the list goes on. I feel truly blessed to be a part of this family and they have made me feel like I belong.
